A London iron-master by the name of Alexander Raby financed Messrs, Gevers & Ingam to setup an Iron furnace at the village of Cwm Ddyche (Furnace) in 1791.

Gevers & Ingman were not able to repay the loan and consequently Alexander Raby took over their concern in 1795-1796.

The Raby`s were a long established firm of iron founders and cannon founders from England, who must have seen the `Llanelli coal field` as a potential source of development after the discovery that a good quality iron could be made from coke (which is derived from coal).

Raby expanded the works providing a second furnace and the erection of a forge at Sandy. He built a home for himself called the Furnace House, later known as the `Delf`, now the site of a new executive housing development, while his elder son Alexander Junior had a mansion called Bryn Y Mor, now the site of the Stradey Park Hotel.

Arthur, his youngest son had a house which was roofed in thatch and burned down in 1824, as did his mansion, built later on the same site called `Glyncoed`.

Furnace village takes its name from Raby`s furnace, where quantities of cannons and shot were produced during the Napoleonic wars. Raby & Co (Carmarthenshire) were frequent contractors to the Board of Ordnance producing `Carronades` and ` Round-Shot`.

Gryphon Leisure Limited, who have taken over the reigns of the Stradey Park Hotel, have transformed it into a modern and vibrant one with a banqueting-cum-conference suite, coffee shop, brasserie, extensive bar area with 46 optics and lounge areas. Boasting of 83 tastefully decorated rooms, each with ensuite facilities, the Hotel is the perfect venue for the long or short stay guest.
