The Royalist was established in 947 and its claim to be the oldest Inn in Britain is confirmed by the Guinness Book of Records. Historical features include witches marks, a leper hole and the remains of an old bear pit: other fascinating exhibits include a Saxon shoe, an ancient frieze and a letter written by a civil war Royalist commander. A handy tunnel leading from the church opposite straight to the bar enabled parishioners to avoid any fire and brimstone emanating from the pulpit.
