The Old Bell Hotel & Restaurant, located next to The Abbey in the centre of Malmesbury, is reputed to be the oldest hotel in England. Walter Loring, sometime Abbot of Malmesbury, founded this ancient hostelry in 1220. Within the hotel, old remnants can still be found. The carved window surrounds on the rear walls, the canopied fireplace in The Great Hall and stone arches cut throught the first floor.

The Old Bell is a comfortable country hotel, full of character and charm. With real log fires, squashy sofas and cosy corners, there is plenty of opportunity to curl up with the Sunday newspapers and an afternoon tea.

The award winning food and excellent wine list is much written about and the restaurant has been awarded 2 AA rosettes for excellence. Guests can dine in either the Edwardian restaurant with its crisp white linen or more informally in the Hanks Room.

The hotel has 31 ensuite rooms, 15 in the main house 16 in the coach house. In the main house, the bedrooms are of a more period nature whilst those in the adjoining coach house have a light and airy feel. Many contain period style double beds.

There is much to explore in the area. Nearby are the mellow stone villages of Lacock (Hogwarts School in Harry Potter), Castle Combe and Bradford on Avon. The ancient stone circles and long barrows of Avebury are not far away and there is great shopping within thirty minutes at Bath and Swindon Designer Outlet. The famous Abbey Gardens are adjacent to the hotel and Westonbirt Gardens and Arboretum are close by.
